Virender Sehwag hoping to play in ICC Champions Trophy

Posted by: devilkarthik on: August 8, 2009

After being out of action for over two months following a shoulder injury that needed surgery, dashing opener Virender Sehwag is hoping to return to top notch cricket through the ICC Champions Trophy next month.

I am hoping to play in the ICC Champions Trophy. My rehabilitation is going well, he said .Sehwag sustained the shoulder injury during the semi finals of the Indian Premier League in South Africa in May while captaining Delhi Daredevils against eventual winners Deccan Chargers.

He was in the Indian squad for the World T20 in England but could not play any part because of the injury to his right shoulder that needed surgery.

Sehwag underwent a surgery on June 11 after a lesion was identified in the injured shoulder and he was ruled out of action from between 12 to 16 weeks. The lesion was expected to heal in six weeks.

Indian team’s physio Nitin Patel was given the task of monitoring Sehwag’s rehabilitation process at the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore. The Champions Trophy, earlier termed the Mini World Cup, is also to be held in South Africa from September 22.

Virender Sehwag said i can never match up to Sachin

Posted by: devilkarthik on: August 7, 2009

India’s only batsman to hit two triple centuries, opener Virender Sehwag says his penchant to hit big centuries in Tests was driven by critics doubting his calibre in the longer version of the game.

In Test matches I’m very cautious. I want to score more runs and I want to score big runs and I want to prove everyone wrong because when I came to the Indian team everybody was saying He’s only a one day player, he cannot bat in Test cricket, he said on an ICC talk show.

The Delhi dasher is currently undergoing rehabilitation after a surgery to be fit for September’s ICC Champions Trophy in South Africa.Often compared to Tendulkar, Sehwag said he always wanted to emulate the little master.

I wanted to become a Tendulkar, but that’s not possible because he is a God of cricket. When I was watching him on television, I tried to copy every single shot.

Sehwag was sent home from England during the ICC World Twenty20 because of a shoulder injury sustained during the second edition of the Indian Premier League.

Anil Kumble, Srinivasan, Bindra in ICC panel to solve WADA row

Posted by: devilkarthik on: August 6, 2009

The International Cricket Council on Thursday formed a five member panel  which includes former Test captain Anil Kumble, BCCI secretary N Srinivasan and ICC Principal Advisor IS Bindra to look into the Indian Cricket Board’s concerns about the ‘whereabout’ clause of the WADA code.

Tim Kerr, the chairman of the ICC’s Anti-Doping Panel, will head the International Registered Testing Pool (IRTP) working group which also includes ICC Chief Executive Haroon Lorgat.

Lorgat formed the panel to resolve BCCI concerns about the implementation of the ‘whereabouts’ requirements of those elite international players selected in the IRTP, so that such players are able to comply in full, the ICC said in a statement.

Even though nothing was finalised about the panel’s first meeting, the group would report back to the ICC Board at the earliest possible opportunity, it said.

Incidentally, Kumble is the cricketer representative on WADA’s Athlete Committee as well.I am pleased we have constituted this group as I believe it will help to resolve the practical concerns of Indian players, Lorgat said.

All of us the ICC and its members including India are committed to a zero tolerance approach in the area of anti-doping but what we have to do is to satisfy the India players on the practical implementation of the new WADA rules on ‘whereabouts’, Lorgat said.

We will all work together and engage with WADA to resolve the concerns so that the India players can fully comply with their obligations under the ICC Anti-Doping Code, Lorgat said.

BCCI President Shashank Manohar hailed the move and said, The BCCI is a willing partner in this process because the objectives of ICC and BCCI are identical regarding cricket as a clean and drug free sport, and we will resolve the issues amicably.

Kumble was happy to be part of the panel and the former India captain said he hoped to find a solution to the issue. It’s good to be part of the working group and to try and understand what the issues are and resolve them and move forward, Kumble said.

The constitution of the IRTP working group follows the BCCI’s decision on Sunday that it would not force its players to file ‘whereabouts’ information necessary under the terms of the ICC Anti-Doping Code.

Manohar explained that decision on the basis that the BCCI’s working committee considered the requirement to be an invasion of the players privacy, a risk to their security and a breach of their constitutional rights to privacy under Indian law.

The 11 cricketers named in the testing pool have objcted to the clause that requires them to share their whereabouts three months in advance, which they find both intrusive and a security risk.

Sachin Tendulkar eyes 15,000 Test runs before retirement

Posted by: devilkarthik on: August 6, 2009

Even after scoring close to 30,000 international runs ever since he started his career, Sachin Tendulkar feels he has not done enough as a batsman.I am not pleased yet with what I have done, said Tendulkar, who has scored a record 12,773 from 159 Tests at an average of 54.58 and 16,684 runs from 425 ODIs.

The 36 year old Tendulkar said he is now aiming to touch 15,000 run mark in Tests.

Sunil Gavaskar has told me that I have to get to 15,000 runs. He said he would be angry with me and would come and catch me if I didn’t. I admire him so much and to score that many would be a terrific achievement, but that is not the only aim, he said, adding that to win the World Cup in 2011 is his another ambition.

Australian captain Ricky Ponting, 34, is close to Tendulkar’s Test mark with 11,193 Test runs so far.Tendulkar, earlier described as second best cricketer after Don Bradman in the history of the game by Wisden, said that if anyone comes close to his style of batting is his teammate Virender Sehwag.

I would say Virender Sehwag comes closest to my style, he said.

Australian great Bradman saw himself in Tendulkar and the Indian batting legend was also the only modern player to figure in his all time XI.Tendulkar admitted that thinking of life without cricket after retirement scares him.

It’s a scary thought. It has been there for my whole adult life, it will be difficult, I have been around for a long time, I can imagine when I finish I will long to face just 10 more balls but you have to move. He, however, said time has not come yet to hang his bat.

I will know when it is the right time, I won’t have to be dragged away. I am the person who will make the decision and I will know whether I still belong.

Tendulkar also revealed how he endured pain while batting in the recent past.

I always play in pain, all the time. I played with a broken finger for the last three months, but you know when pain is manageable or not, and most of the time I can do it.

I can still do what I did when I was 25 but the body is changing, so your thought process has to change too. I have had to change how I think, which is about taking less risk, he said.

Graeme Swann proud of Ponting ‘wonderball’

Posted by: devilkarthik on: August 5, 2009

Spunky England off-spinner Graeme Swann rates the ball with which he castled Ricky Ponting in the Edgbaston Test as the most satisfying delivery of his career, something he can tell his grandchildren about with considerable pride.

The ball with which I bowled Ricky Ponting at Edgbaston was the most satisfying of my career, Swann wrote in his column for ‘The Sun’.I’ll never tire of talking about it and I’m sure my grandkids will get the full story in 30 years’ time, said.

I’m not exactly the silent type so I wonder if I can go through the Fourth Test at Headingley without mentioning the ball. I doubt it.And, when I’m with my pipe and slippers, it will give me a great memory and conversation piece, he said.

As for my England team mates well, they are already fed up seeing and hearing about the delivery! quipped Swann.Sometimes, as a spin bowler, the ball comes out perfectly and flights and pitches in exactly the way you want.

When it happens, there’s no better feeling, he said.Recalling the delivery, he said, I’d bowled a decent over to Ponting as I tried to vary my pace and hit the rough created by Mitchell Johnson’s footmarks. Then, from the last ball of that over, I got one to drift away in the air and then turn in sharply to the batsman.

Ponting is Australia’s best player and captain so his wicket is always key. It was a huge moment for us. The big screen replayed it loads of times that evening so the other England players have already watched it more times than they’d like, Swann said.

Despite maintaining their advantage, England could not win the Test and Swann seemed disappointed.I needed to produce another couple of similar balls on the final day and I didn’t.

We really believed we could take the eight remaining Australian wickets but I think the bowlers were all guilty of trying of too hard. We were trying to bowl magic balls rather than be patient, he said.

Swann felt the pitch had little to offer but nothing could be taken away from Michael Clarke and Marcus North who saved the match for Australia. The ball went soft and didn’t swing, the pitch went flat and we couldn’t force any chances…It’s bizarre how cricket balls swing some days but not others.

So we were disappointed at the end. But we must accept Michael Clarke and Marcus North looked very composed, Swann said.

In Knight Riders no decision on captain, coach yet

Posted by: devilkarthik on: August 5, 2009

Indian Premier League franchisee Kolkata Knight Riders on Tuesday said the new captain and coach for the team still remains undecided.

After the conclusion of the meeting at team owner Shah Rukh Khan’s residence, the management said the decision will be taken by the end of August and emphasised on Sourav Ganguly’s role as a mentor, who will be a part of all decision making.

Earlier, SRK said that Ganguly has been re-appointed skipper for next season, saying that captaincy of the side would be decided in a series of meetings from August 4 to 15.

We will be meeting on August 4 and that’s when all decisions on coach, captaincy and hopefully a formula for winning at least some of the matches next year would be worked out, Shah Rukh said.

KKR, which finished bottom of the table this season, sacked coach John Buchanan after the debacle and former India coach John Wright is tipped to fill in the post vacated by the Australian.

The team’s captaincy is also a subject of massive speculation and Ganguly, who was replaced by New Zealand Brendon McCullum this season, is all set to return at the helm for IPL -III scheduled next April.
